MONGODB COMMUNITY SERVER · SOURCE-AVAILABLE (SSPL)

Engineer Reliable Document Database Applications.

Design and operate MongoDB Community Server for appropriate document-oriented workloads with clear licensing, security and operational guardrails.

Licensing.

MongoDB Community Server is source-available under the Server Side Public License (SSPL) for releases since October 2018. The SSPL is not an OSI-approved open-source license. We include MongoDB Community under our broader “Open-Source & Community Support” category, and we review licensing for your deployment and use case as part of every engagement. This is not legal advice; your legal team should confirm that your intended use complies with the license.

Independent MongoDB Community engineering.

These are independent Bassirah engineering and support offerings. They do not imply upstream vendor or foundation endorsement, official vendor support rights, enterprise feature entitlement or maintenance guarantees.

WHY IT MATTERS

Flexible Documents Need Deliberate Design

Document flexibility helps evolving applications, but schema, query patterns, consistency, indexing and cluster operations require deliberate design.

Flexible schemas let teams ship features without database migrations for every change. Without design discipline, the same flexibility produces unbounded documents, missing indexes, poorly chosen shard keys and inconsistent read and write guarantees. Bassirah brings data modeling, cluster engineering and operational practice to MongoDB Community deployments so they stay reliable as applications grow.

WHAT BASSIRAH DELIVERS

Independent MongoDB Community Engineering

  • Modeling and query design — Assess data modeling, indexes, query plans and shard keys.
  • Replication and sharding — Implement replication/sharding as appropriate and test recovery procedures.
  • Security — Harden authentication, network access, encryption options and monitoring.
  • Licensing and lifecycle — Plan licensing review, backups, upgrade testing and lifecycle controls.
  • Consistency design — Choose read and write concerns per operation so durability and latency match business needs.
  • Capacity planning — Size memory, storage and IOPS against working set and growth projections.
  • Observability — Monitoring and alerts for replication lag, slow operations, connections and resource saturation.
  • Runbooks — Election, restore, scaling and upgrade runbooks handed over to your team.

ENGINEERING FOCUS

Design Decisions That Are Expensive to Change Later

Document and schema design

Model documents around access patterns: what to embed, what to reference, and how to keep document size bounded. Add schema validation where data quality matters.

Indexes and query plans

Build indexes from real query shapes, verify plans, and remove indexes that cost writes without serving reads.

Abstract illustration of data evenly distributed across shards

Shard keys

Choose shard keys for even distribution and targeted queries, and decide early whether sharding is needed at all.

RESILIENCE

Replica Sets You Can Trust, Restores You Have Tested

We design availability, backup and security for each deployment and prove recovery against RTO and RPO you approve. See HA/DR & Platform Reliability.

Replica Sets You Can Trust, Restores You Have Tested
ScenarioDesign patternHow we validate
Primary node failureReplica set with an odd number of voting members across failure domains, so a new primary can be elected; drivers configured for retryable operationsControlled step-down and node-loss drills
Data loss on acknowledged writesWrite concern chosen per data class so critical writes are acknowledged by a majorityReview of application write paths and failover tests
Accidental deletion or corruptionScheduled backups with a consistent method suited to your topology, stored separatelyRestore drill into an isolated environment
Site or region lossReplica set members or backups in a second site, with documented recovery stepsSite failover and recovery exercise

Security baseline

  • Authentication enabled with strong mechanisms, and role-based access with least privilege.
  • TLS for client and intra-cluster traffic.
  • Network exposure restricted to trusted application networks.
  • Encryption at rest provided at the storage or volume layer where the community edition does not provide it natively.
MongoDB Community topologies: a three-member replica set across failure domains with backups, and a sharded cluster of replica-set shards behind query routers with config servers, protected by TLS, authentication and network controls.

KNOW THE EDITION

What the Community Edition Does and Does Not Include

Some capabilities are available only in commercial MongoDB editions or services. We map your requirements to the edition you run before design starts, so there are no surprises in security reviews or audits.

Independent Community Server support does not include commercial MongoDB features, vendor support or vendor security fixes. If a requirement needs MongoDB Atlas or MongoDB Enterprise Advanced, Bassirah can deliver it through our partner-led route, with vendor support provided under your MongoDB subscription. USE CASES

Where MongoDB Community Fits

Evolving application data

Application document data and evolving domain models where flexible schemas speed delivery.

Content and event systems

Content and event-oriented operational systems with varied document shapes.

Operational records for analytics

Operational records exposed to analytical query layers without overloading the primary.

WORKS WITH

MongoDB Community in the Wider Portfolio

Trino can query supported MongoDB collections via its connector. DataHub metadata support must be confirmed per release. PostgreSQL and Cassandra are alternatives for different consistency and scale patterns.

Trino OSS

Query supported MongoDB collections alongside relational and lakehouse data.

OSS

PostgreSQL

A relational alternative where strong relational constraints and SQL fit better.

OSS

Apache Cassandra

A distributed alternative for high-ingest, multi-datacenter patterns.

OSS

Managed Services

Contracted operations and incident handling for MongoDB Community estates.

MongoDB Community: Frequently Asked Questions

MongoDB Community Server is source-available under the Server Side Public License for modern releases. It is included under the broader “Open-Source & Community Support” website category rather than labeled an OSI-approved open-source product.

It depends on how you use and distribute it. The SSPL places specific conditions on offering the software as a service. Your legal team should review your intended use; we include a licensing review in our engagements to surface questions early.

No. Our services are independent engineering and support for MongoDB Community Server. Vendor support and commercial features require a separate agreement with the vendor.

Not always. Many workloads run well on a well-sized replica set. We assess data volume, write throughput and growth before recommending sharding, because a poor shard key is hard to change later.

Trino provides a MongoDB connector that can query supported collections with SQL. We validate data types, performance and load on the operational cluster before recommending that path.
